Computer security is a hot topic these days. Each day there are new stories of someone who has had their personal information stolen or their computer exploited for some ill purpose. The onslaught of cyber crime is so worrisome that governments all over the world are scrambling to come up with concrete solutions. The best thing you can do is to put yourself in the position of being a victim and learn how to check computer security.

The first step to take if you want to protect your computer is to be aware of what it is that could cause you to become a victim of a harmful computer virus. Many people do not realize that the Internet is a major reason why computer viruses are so prevalent. Since computers are so cheap these days, they are susceptible to being infected with viruses, worms, Trojans, and worms that can infect them and infect your files. There are millions of unique viruses floating around on the Internet at any given moment. The most popular among them are those that attack critical system files such as registry keys and system files.

In order to avoid becoming one of the victims of an Internet virus, it is important that you have antivirus software running on your computer. This will prevent against malicious software running at the same time that it will prevent harmful viruses from infecting your computer. There are so many different kinds of these software out there on the market today and you may not even be able to tell them apart. You have to be careful when picking out one for your computer.

How to check if your computer is infected is quite easy. Simply type in "antivirus software" on the search box of a search engine and hit enter. Once you get the results go through the results and look for words like "free" or "risk-free". If these appear at the top of the results then you are looking at a program that is either not working properly or has already been infected with malware. These programs are not recommended and should not be downloaded. Go onto the next page instead and learn more about choosing the best security program for you.

As we have established earlier, most viruses are created by hackers to collect information from your computer. The most common type of viruses is spyware. They are created to gather information from your computer and send it somewhere else. It is very important that you are vigilant with your security updates and installations. Many people forget to manually restart their computers after downloading an update or installing an antivirus program.

Now that we know what a virus is and how they spread, we can get back to how to check if your computer is infected or not. To do this simply open up "My Computer" and find the Programs tab. On the left side of the Programs section you will see icons such as ActiveX. Click on ActiveX and it will open a new window. If you notice there is malware or spyware in the list of programs then it is safe to delete them. Many times these malicious programs will have a feature that will allow them to back up their files so you can restore them if you need to.

Your other option is to purchase some sort of antivirus software that will help protect your computer. There are plenty of these products available and will depend on the price that you pay. I highly recommend scanning your computer at least once a week with an up-to-date antivirus software program to help protect your computer and help protect your data.

My preferred method of how to check computer security scan is through the software "XoftSpy". This software will run a complete scan on your computer and report back any problems that it may find. XoftSpy works great and is very user friendly. This type of software will run a complete virus scan, execute a full system scan, check disk space, registry, email and browser threats and will report them all in a very compact report. This software is great for those who do not have the time to constantly scan their computers. It also works great for business people who travel a lot and who need to keep their computer at safe.
